THERE are long delays on the M25 this afternoon after part of the motorway and the A25 were closed. The M25 was closed following a serious incident between Junctions 4 and 5 anticlockwise where a driver collided with the central reservation. All lanes were closed on the anticlockwise carriageway from 10.15 this morning and remained shut until almost 12.30pm. The traffic is currently backed up to Clackett Lane services. A STAMP collection was stolen from a property in Bowater Road, in Maidenbower, on Wednesday, September 9. Between 7.15am and 7.20pm someone entered the house through the utility room window. Laptops and a TV were also taken in the burglary.

A PROPOSAL to join up two existing cycle paths to create a continuous route through the town centre has been labelled a "missed opportunity" because drivers will still have priority on one section. A woman, who is thought to be from eastern Europe and in her 40s, was seized after managing to get on the plane in Barcelona without the correct documents. AN aircraft has made a safe landing at Gatwick after declaring an emergency this morning. Germania Airline flight ST1938 declared the emergency at about 8.30am while it was over the English Channel. It performed a u0turn and headed to Gatwick. The plane had departed from Norwich International Airport at 7.48am and was due to reach Palma in Majorca at 11.08am. Website www.airlive.net reported that the plane had landed safely at Gatwick at 8.48am. The reason for the emergency is not yet known.

TWO tortoises have been stolen during a burglary at a home in Colgate. The two Mediterranean spur thighed tortoises are a male called Lew and a female called Lyn. Lew is about 8 inches long and has a darker shell in part, while Lyn is about 7 inches long and has an overall lighter shell. The incident happened between 1 and 1.30am on Sunday, August 30, in the car park when the victim, a 27-year-old man, had acid thrown in his face. A 51-YEAR-OLD man has been fined after admitted possessing cocaine.John Morgan, of Ashdown Drive, Tilgate, was caught with the class A drug on August 6 in Crawley.He pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court on August 20 and was fined £400.In addition he must pay court costs of £265 and a £40 victim surcharge. The cocaine was forfeited and will be destroyed.

A MAN has been attacked and raped in an alleyway while he was out running in Furnace Green. The 34-year old jogger, who is a local man, had reached the alleyway off Waterlea when he was attacked by a man who raped him before running off. The victim was badly shaken following the incident at about 6.45am on Friday, August 14, but he did not report it to police until last Friday (September 18). The suspect is described as white, about 6ft tall, and wearing a grey hooded top and white trainers....

POLICE have detained a man for his own safety after he threatened to jump from a car park at Gatwick Airport.Sussex Police officers based at Gatwick Airport were called to a car park at the North Terminal at 11pm on Sunday after receiving a distressing report.A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: "We were called after a man said he wanted to jump off the car park."A 28-year-old man was found by the barriers and detained under section 136 of the mental health act.

AN inquest into the death of an Ifield man ruled that the 83-year-old died of natural causes relating to the frailty of old age. Dementia sufferer John Hollamby was living at Deerswood Lodge care home, in Ifield, at the time of his death. On August 14 an ambulance was called as he had suffered a suspected stroke, but he refused to go to hospital. He died later the same day. The inquest into Mr Hollamby's death took place in Horsham last Wednesday.

A MAN was pulled aside, searched and questioned by police at Gatwick after joking to his girlfriend that he had a gun in his bag. At 12.50pm yesterday (Monday) police were called by airport security staff to the North Terminal departures concourse. The passenger, who was checking in to fly to Turkey had been overheard making the remark to his girlfriend. There was no gun and the man was strongly advised not to make such remarks. He was not arrested and went on his way.
