THE discovery of up to 100 billion barrels of oil close to Gatwick Airport could bring huge benefits to Crawley, the council's leader has declared.UK Oil & Gas Investments (UKOG), which drilled for oil at Horse Hill, just north of Hookwood, says its analysis of its well suggests the local area could hold 158 million barrels of oil per square mile.UKOG admits that only between three and 15 per cent could be recovered.But with the price of just one barrel of oil last week being £35.28...

A MAN has been fined for being drunk and disorderly at Ifield station.Peter Haynes appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court on March 26, where he pleaded guilty to a charge of being drunk and disorderly in a public place.The 67-year-old committed the offence on Christmas Eve 2014.Haynes, from The Grange, in Brighton Road, Southgate, was ordered to pay a fine of £40.Magistrates also imposed a £20 victim surcharge and ordered him to pay £85 court costs.

THE BODY of a man has been found in a Pound Hill flat. Police were called at 10.45am yesterday (April 17) over concerns for the welfare of the man in his fifties. Officers entered a flat in Newbury Road and discovered his body. Firefighters assisted in the recovery of the man's body from the home. There are no suspicious circumstances and the death has been passed to the coroner's officer to investigate.

The smoke was seen over the southbound carriageway between Junction 9 (Gatwick) and Junction 10 (Crawley) at 12.37pm. FIREFIGHTERS were called out today (Saturday) after a burst pipe began to flood a house. One fire engine was dispatched from Crawley Fire Station at around 3.30pm. When the fire crew arrived at the property, on Staplefield Road, Staplefield, the water had already been isolated. No damage had been caused. FIREFIGHTERS were sent out last night (Saturday) to reports of a possible house fire that turned out to be a large bonfire. Two fire engines from Crawley were dispatched at around 8.15pm. A man had been burning wood in his garden which prompted the emergency call. Firefighters stood by and waited for the blaze to die down before issuing fire safety advice to the occupiers of the property, at West Park Road, Handcross. Fire crews were away from the scene after around 20 minutes.
